The Project

On June 4th and 5th, LUDWIG and StrandLAB Almere present WaterWalks IJmeer: a two-day explorational walk along the IJmeer. This entire weekend we invite you to share your own personal connection to the IJmeer with the WaterWalks app: from unique birds and plants to found objects and personal stories. By walking along the IJmeer with this app, you become part of the larger WaterWalks project, initiated by LUDWIG as a global water monitoring project to raise awareness about the rapidly changing water environment. Through the app you can share stories, record sounds and conversations, take photos, make videos, share interesting links and even water-quality measurements. You can also discover what other people contribute and explore new routes. This is how we create a living open database of the state and future of our waterways together.

For this special weekend we invited several ambassadors to walk along the IJmeer with the WaterWalks app. They will share their reflections and impressions through the app, from their own background and expertise, focussing on water issues, ecology, the development of the IJmeer and the surrounding landscape. Ambassadors include artists, scientists and journalists, like stand-up comedian Mo Hersi, Government Architect Floris Alkemade, TV-presenter Floortje Dessing, landscape architect Thijs de Zeeuw, photographer Kadir van Lohuizen, ecologist and philosopher Li-An Phoa, composer/change-maker Merlijn Twaalfhoven and maritime archaeologist Yftinus from Popta. You will be able to experience their walk LIVE via the livestream on this website.

Along the route there will be much to see and do as well: on both days you can participate in cultural activities, special tours and interdisciplinary encounters around the IJmeer. Cultural activities include guided tours, a walking lecture, a water measurement workshop or try-out by artists, programme makers, residents and partner organizations.
